A Rich History Since 1937
Gladhill Brothers, established in 1937 by F. Upton Gladhill and Bernard “Buck” Gladhill, holds the distinction of being the first John Deere dealership in Damascus, Maryland. The brothers successfully navigated their business through wartime challenges and the post-war economic boom, laying a strong foundation for their dealership.
Expansion and Evolution
Recognizing the need for a John Deere dealership in Frederick, Maryland, Buck Gladhill initiated the opening of Gladhill Tractor Mart in January 1962. This expansion catered to the growing demand for John Deere’s “Long Green Line” of products. In the 1970s, Upton and Buck passed managerial control and ownership to their sons, ensuring the business stayed in the family.
Building for the Future
1979 marked a significant milestone with the construction of a new building in Frederick. This facility was designed to accommodate larger sales, parts, and service departments, reflecting the dealership’s growing customer base. In 1994, Gladhill Brothers moved to a new location at 28129 Ridge Road, just outside Damascus, and Gladhill Tractor relocated to 5509 Mt. Zion Rd. in the summer of 2005.
A Legacy Continued
The passing of Upton Gladhill in 1986 and Buck Gladhill in 2005 marked the end of an era. However, their legacy continues with second and third-generation family members actively involved in both dealerships. This family-driven approach ensures a deep understanding of customer needs and a commitment to quality service.
