John Deere Recalls Popular ZTrak Mowers Over Fire Hazard

John Deere has issued a recall for approximately 39,000 ZTrak™ Zero-Turn Mowers equipped with Kawasaki engines due to a significant fire and burn risk. This recall also includes around 2,600 units sold in Canada.

What’s the Issue?

The problem stems from the mower’s voltage regulator, which can fail during use or storage. This malfunction may cause the engine to overheat, posing a serious fire hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urges owners to immediately stop using the mowers until they are repaired.

Kawasaki, the engine manufacturer, has received five reports of fires and 26 additional complaints about melting or smoking components. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.

Affected Models

The recall impacts the following John Deere ZTrak Zero-Turn Mowers with Kawasaki engines:

  • Z720E: Serial numbers from 1TC720E010001 to 1TC720E080657
  • Z730M: Serial numbers from 1TC730M010001 to 1TC730M080574
  • Z740R: Serial numbers from 1TC740R010001 to 1TC740R080462
  • Z760R: Serial numbers from 1TC760R080001 to 1TC760R080339

Owners can locate the model and serial numbers on the mower’s right side, near the rear tire.

Consumer Experience

While the recall process might seem inconvenient, ensuring safety is worth the temporary hassle. As one customer put it, “It’s a bit of a bother to take the mower back to the dealer, but knowing it’ll be safe to use again makes it worth the wait.”

What to Do Next

If you own one of these mowers, stop using it immediately and verify your model and serial number. Contact your nearest John Deere dealer to arrange for the repair.

The recalled mowers were sold nationwide through authorized John Deere dealers from October 2018 to September 2024, with prices ranging between $8,000 and $11,500.

Safety First

Although no injuries have been reported, ignoring the issue could lead to dangerous situations. As a reminder, safety always comes first — especially when dealing with heavy machinery like mowers.
