John Deere Teams Up with Starlink to Enhance Agricultural Connectivity

John Deere, a leader in American agricultural machinery, is advancing its connectivity solutions for agriculture by partnering with Starlink to test satellite internet technology. This collaboration involves an early access program with participants from the United States and Brazil, focusing on integrating Starlink’s capabilities with John Deere’s farm management systems.

According to a report from Via Satellite, the initiative will offer an aftermarket solution that combines a ruggedized Starlink terminal with a cellular modem. This setup aims to ensure seamless connectivity for agricultural machinery, enhancing operations and management. Currently, select customers who have purchased Starlink kits are actively involved in the trials.

Michael Kool, John Deere’s Senior Product Manager of Connectivity, has reported promising results from the program, especially in Brazil. Customers there have successfully used the satellite system for in-field data sharing and logistics management. Kool highlighted the system’s potential to significantly reduce downtime and support costs by allowing dealers remote access to machinery for diagnostics and troubleshooting, even from remote locations such as Mato Grosso, Brazil’s largest agricultural state.

The collaboration with Starlink is also driving innovations tailored specifically for agricultural use. SpaceX, which manufactures Starlink equipment, is set to produce a specialized, rugged version for farm equipment, expected to hit production lines in November.

Kool expressed enthusiasm about the joint effort, emphasizing its groundbreaking nature in the agriculture sector.

“It’s been a transformative experience to see our teams come together to deliver a pioneering connectivity solution,” he remarked.

“We aim to offer this technology at a competitive price, encouraging widespread adoption among our customers and enhancing their operational efficiency through improved connectivity.”
