John Deere, or more specifically its South African subsidiary, one of the oldest John Deere subsidiaries in the world, founded 140 years ago in South Africa, introduced a 40-ton ADT on Tuesday, July 26, to the South African domestic market with the 460 Series ADT redesigned for the realities of the African market.
The 460 Series articulated hauler is used in the mining industry and is designed for heavy-duty applications. The upgraded model number 460E-II, boasts the following upgrades:
- Wider and roomier body,
- A wider, roomier body,
- Upgraded electronic systems,
- Added new drive modes.
All this is done in order to improve operators’ work efficiency and working conditions.
“John Deere is proud to say that this machine is built to last,” said the John Deere press office.
The new and improved body is easier to load and carry, and there is less chance of spillage during travel because of the lowered and leveled height of the load guide.
The 460E-II is available with an ejector body for use in hazardous terrain with limited overhead clearance under overhead power lines or under bridges and overpasses. Capacity of the body is increased to 25.2 m3. And the total payload is up to 41.8 tons.
In addition, the 460E-II, equipped with a new eight-speed transmission, will reach a maximum speed of 55 kph. It is also worth noting the presence of four reverse gears in three drive modes, which simplify the use of the truck on difficult terrains and types of terrain.
It is worth noting the 7% reduction in fuel consumption compared to existing models under normal operating conditions. In ECO-mode, the truck’s engine is in ECO mode, achieving fuel savings of up to 12 percent.
It is worth to note the differential lock in Traction mode to increase traction on soft and slippery ground. New more precise sensors of wheel rotation speed, will provide more accurate information about the speed, thanks to them, the mode of automatic differential locks, only when – it is necessary.
Other improvements to the 460E-II
New heavy-duty axles with extended service life thanks to self-lubrication, new filter and cooling system
- spring-driven and hydraulic parking brake release system increases reliability.
- Wet-cooled disc brakes, to additional separate forced cooling and filtering of brake axles.
- Automatic lubricator provides lubrication and filtration to all components of the truck, thereby extending the service life of units and components.
- The hydraulic hoses and electrical lines are reduced and simplified by more than 10 percent to minimize the potential for damage and leaks during operation.
Separate mention should be made of the safety systems:
- Remote parking brake disengagement
- tipping protection
- tipping alarm
John Deere also pushed the envelope for operator comfort by introducing what it calls a one-switch solution, reducing the number of switches by 25% compared to previous models, while the quieter, sealed cab features a new easy-to-read monitor and back panel. – camera display, as well as options such as a premium heated/ventilated seat and automatic temperature control system .
The 460E-II can be serviced and maintained from ground level, making it easier, faster and safer for maintenance personnel to access the engine and equipment compartment.
